Giovannes Mathis (born June 7, 1824 in Celerina / Schlarigna , † August 7, 1912 ) was a Rhaeto-Romanic writer, novelist and poet. He wrote mainly in the Upper Engadin idiom Puter , but also in Vallader , the Lower Engadin idiom of the Romance language.

life and work

Mathis left the Upper Engadin at the age of 15 and worked as one of the many Engadin confectioners, first in Brussels , where he also completed his apprenticeship, and later in Toulon and Genoa . His best-known, strongly autobiographical novel is Amicizcha ed amur (= "Friendship and Love").

One of the main features of his works is the motif of homesickness (= "increschantüna").

reception

In August 2012, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, an «Omagi [= Hommage] to Giovannes Mathis» took place in his birthplace Celerina. Part of Mathis' estate is in the Biblioteca Chasa Jaura .
