Chasa Jaura Museum

The Museum Chasa Jaura (dt. Haus der Jauer ), also Talmuseum Münstertal , is a cultural site opened in 1973 in Valchava ( Switzerland ). It is located in an Engadine house that is over 300 years old and is a local museum and an art museum at the same time .

history

The former semi-detached house Chasa Jaura was built in the 17th century. Data on the outside staircase and in the roof structure testify to a renovation in the years 1724 to 1727. A restoration took place from 1970 to 1973 under the direction of Iachen Ulrich Könz , a partial restoration in the years 1999 to 2001. At times it served as a parish hall . Instead of the former barn, there is now an exhibition and lecture hall.

museum

The collection illustrates the rural and artisanal way of life of the valley population. Original furniture and equipment can be found in the living room, bedroom and kitchen as well as in an alpine dairy .

Hammer forge

An original hammer forge has been rebuilt in the former cattle shed in the cellar of the house . This was originally set up in Valchava in 1884 . It was run by a Largiadèr family for three generations . After its shutdown in the middle of the 20th century, it was dismantled into around 250 individual parts and documented using scale drawings and photographs.

The forge has a deep water wheel with a diameter of 2.24 meters. Your wooden parts are all made of larch . The waterwheel shaft, two hammer mills and a grindstone can be viewed here. The bellows and an air procreation barrel (water drum fan) for also built Esse , can be seen along with the forging tools.

It is the only such facility in the canton and one of only 15 preserved in all of Switzerland. A model of the hammer forge in Valchava made by Adolf Gähwiler can be found in the Davos Mining Museum.

Special exhibitions

There are seasonal changing exhibitions , each dedicated to individual exponents of contemporary visual arts . Their works are mainly not exhibited in separate rooms, but within the collection. Thereby old folk property enters into dialogue with the forms of expression of the present. Some of the objects are specially designed for the exhibitions.

Library

The Biblioteca Chasa Jaura, founded in 1984, is institutionally connected to the house . This valley library comprises several thousand volumes. Today it is in a different building, in the parish hall. Among other things, it houses the estate of the Romanist Heinrich Schmid . Manuscripts of some of his works can also be found here as bequests from Giovannes Mathis .
