Giovanni Andrea Doria
Giovanni Andrea Doria (* 1539 ; † 1606 ) was the son of Gianettino Doria and, after his death, the adopted son of his great-uncle Andrea Doria .
In 1556 he took over the command of the Genoese fleet in Spanish service .
Naval battle of Djerba
In 1560 Doria commanded a fleet of 200 ships and 30,000 soldiers of the Holy League that was to attack Tripoli . The city was meanwhile ruled by Turgut Reis , whom Barbarossa had ransomed in 1544. The fleet gathered at Messina . On March 12, 1560, Doria conquered the island of Djerba , which ruled the sea routes between Algiers , Tunis and Tripoli. Sultan Suleyman then dispatched a fleet of 120 ships under Piyale Pascha , which arrived off Djerba on May 9 and attacked the Spaniards. The naval battle of Djerba with the Spanish fleet lasted until May 14th. On May 12th, Turgut Reis sent more ships, which ensured the victory of the Ottomans. The league lost about 60 galleys and 20,000 men, i.e. 2/3 of its soldiers. Giovanni Andrea Doria fled on a small ship. The Ottomans occupied Djerba again.
In 1564 Giovanni Andrea Doria won a sea battle near Corsica.
Cyprus
In 1570 Doria was in command of the fleet of the Holy League , which had been sent to the Venetians to rescue the Ottomans from Cyprus . However, by deliberately delaying the departure from Crete to Kyrenia on the orders of Philip II , he caused the fall of the island.
Naval Battle of Lepanto
He also did not take part in the battle of Lepanto (Naupaktos) on October 7, 1571 under Don Juan de Austria .
progeny
Numerous families descend from Giovanni Andreas' son Andrea Doria, such as the Doria Pamphili , princes of Melfi in Rome , the princes of Angri in Naples and the Lamba Doria in Genoa.
