Elisabetta Sirani paints her father Giovan Andrea Sirani

Sirani was a student of Giacomo Cavedone , as well as a student and employee of Guido Renis (1575-1642). In this way he painted a number of altarpieces for churches, especially in his hometown of Bologna, among them the "Banquet in the House of the Pharisee" in the Charterhouse, the "Presentation in the Temple" in the Pinacoteca in Bologna and the "Ascension of Christ" in the Borgo Panicale deserve special mention. Sirani was an advocate of academism .

After Reni's death, Giovanni Sirani founded his own school, in which his daughter Elisabetta Sirani was his master student . His latest works show influences from the Venetian School such as the painters Francesco Gessi and Simone Cantarini . He died in 1670, five years after his daughter's untimely death.
