Giovanni Antonio Piani , detto Des Planes (* 1678 in Naples , † after 1759) was an Italian violinist and composer .

Live and act

Piani's father Pietro Giacomo Piani, from Bologna, was a trumpeter at the court of Naples . Giovanni Antonio Piani studied at the " Conservatorio della Pietá dei Turchini " with Gian Carlo Cailò (1652–1722) and Nicola Vinciprova. From 1704 he stayed in Paris , where he was in the service of Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon . Also here was Jean-Baptiste Senaillé his student.

In Paris Piani published his 12 sonatas for violin or flute and B. c. Op. 1. For this print he received a ten-year royal privilege, which should prevent reprints. Nevertheless, Le Cène published six sonatas from this collection for flute and basso continuo under the name Pianis as early as 1716 . In the history of music, Pianis Op. 1 is remarkable because for the first time the terms crescendo, diminuendo ( dynamics (music) and messa di voce ) can be found in one print .

From 1721 to 1757 Piani was the highest paid member of the Vienna Court Music Band , where he was appointed director of instrumental music under Empress Maria Theresa in 1741 .
