Life

Giovanni Antonio Rigatti received his musical training from 1621 as a choirboy at St. Mark's Basilica , as well as in one of the conservatories in Venice, he also received training as a priest. From September 1635 to March 1637 he was choirmaster at Udine Cathedral . From 1639 he was "maestro d'organo e musica alle figliole" at the Conservatory of the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice. Rigatti also taught at the Ospedale dei Incurabili without having received the approval of his superiors, whereupon a specially convened commission dismissed him. He appointed him canon at St. Mark's Basilica in 1637 .

Rigatti published nine volumes of sacred music (five single and concert motets, four psalms and three masses) and two books of secular music (monodies in concertato style and madrigals). His music contains enchanting melodies and is still powerful, it is imaginative in its structures and is characterized by dramatic word paintings. The 1640 the Emperor Ferdinand III. Messa e Salmi, dedicated to the Messa e Salmi, is Rigatti's most impressive collection, it has a consistently high level of musical inventiveness similar to that shown by Claudio Monteverdi in his Selva morale e spirituale , which appeared in the same period.
