Giovanni Battista Foggini
Giovanni Battista Foggini (born April 25, 1652 in Florence , † April 12, 1725 there ) was an Italian sculptor and architect of the late Baroque .
Life
His parents were Agnolo Foggini and Isabella Sercetti. He was first apprenticed to two painters in succession (Jacopo Giorgi and Vincenzo Dandini), but he soon showed a greater inclination towards sculpture. In 1673 he was given to the young Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III. de 'Medici to study in the recently established Accademia Fiorentina in Rome . He stayed there for three years with Ercole Ferrata , also a late baroque sculptor.
After his return in 1676 he was still under the protection of the Medici. In 1687 he became a court sculptor and soon afterwards also a court architect. He made a large number of portrait busts for the Medici and other important personalities in Florence. He also furnished a number of churches with reliefs. For the Medici, he built the new version of the monastery church of San Bartolomeo di Buonsollazzo . The tomb of St. Francis Xavier in the Basílica do Bom Jesus in Old Goa comes from him . Foggini also had some students, including a. Balthasar Permoser , who continued to develop his style after his death.
