Giovanni Battista Vitali

Giovanni Battista Vitali (born February 18, 1632 in Bologna , † October 12, 1692 ibid) was an Italian composer and conductor of the Baroque.

Life

Vitali was probably for a short period of time a student of Maurizio Cazzati , who was Kapellmeister at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna from 1657 . From 1658 Vitali got a job as a singer and as a player of the "Violone da brazzo" ( violone ). After the publication of his Opus 1 he was accepted into the " Accademia Filarmonica " in 1666 and from 1673 was for a short time Kapellmeister at San Rosario. At the court of Duke Francesco II. D'Este in Modena , he was appointed vice conductor in 1674, and in 1684 he was appointed conductor. He was also a member of the " Accademia dei Dissonati " in Modena. In 1686 he gave up the post of Kapellmeister to Antonio Giannettini , but remained vice conductor until the end of his life.

Later his son Tomaso Antonio Vitali , called Vitalino , took over the position of conductor at the court of Modena.

His publications had a significant influence on the development of the baroque trio sonata . Vitali's ideas for the connection of themes and keys within a movement as well as the use of dance rhythms brought the development of the trio sonata forward and inspired later composers such as Arcangelo Corelli and Henry Purcell . They used this as the basis for the baroque trio sonata.

Vitali also composed ecclesiastical and secular cantatas and sonatas, oratorios, psalms, hymns but also numerous dance music. In 1689 he wrote a didactic collection "Artificii musicali" comprising 60 instrumental pieces.
