Giovanni Battista degli Antonii (born June 24, 1636 in Bologna , † 1698 ibid) was an Italian composer of the Bolognese School of the Baroque.

Live and act

Giovanni Battista degli Antonii was the son of a trombonist at the Basilica of San Petronio and a brother of the musician Pietro degli Antonii . He received his musical training from his father and possibly from Giacomo Maria Predieri (1611–1695). His first job was as a trombonist at the Concerto Palatino , where he worked until 1675. At the same time he was briefly a member of the Capella musicale at San Petronio from 1654, but was dismissed in December 1657 after a restructuring by conductor Maurizio Cazzati . In 1684 he was accepted into the Accademia Filarmonica . From 1687 to 1698 he was organist at the Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore .

His collections, which appeared in print from 1687 onwards, contain instrumental music exclusively, primarily for violin and violoncello . In addition, two collections of Versetti for organ were published (1687 and 1696). For almost a hundred years, his twelve Ricercari Op. 1 ascribed a pioneering importance for cello literature and they were considered to be the earliest examples of the development of a solo repertoire for cello , especially alongside the works of Domenico Gabrielli . However, at the end of the 20th century, the manuscript of the Ricercate per il violino was found in the Biblioteca Estense in Modena , which after a short time turned out to be the upper part of the supposed violoncello solo works, as these were available in the same copy. A printed version of these violin works has not survived and it remains strange that the violoncello part was declared in print as Ricercate sopra il violoncello . Regardless of the fact that the question of some cellists as to whether some of the Ricercari can be solo works by nature has been answered, others can also be played very well as solo pieces for a bass instrument.
