Giovanni Hoffmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Hoffmann , also Johann Hoffmann (* around 1770, † 1814, according to other sources possibly in Vienna in 1840 ) was an Austrian mandolinist and composer.

life and work

Almost nothing is known about his life. His year of birth is often set around 1770, on the other hand, some authors date his works for stylistic reasons as early as the 1770s to the 1780s. Marga Wilden-Hüsgen speaks in a CD booklet without specifying sources of an origin in Milan . Some music dictionaries use the first name "Johann", but there is apparently no evidence that this form of name is authentic. All references to his work come from Vienna.

Two collections of his duets appeared in print in 1799 under the name "Giovanni Hoffmann" by the music publisher Johann Träger in Vienna. Furthermore, in his publisher's catalog for 1804, Träger offered Hoffmann's Mandolin Concerto, which apparently did not appear in print but was offered as a manuscript. Reprints published by Artaria . Further compositions are preserved as manuscripts in the archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . He composed for the six-course soprano lute in a third-fourth tuning, which is now known as the “baroque mandolin”. His works require a high level of technical skill and suggest that he may have been an outstanding instrumentalist. His works were rediscovered in the 20th century, recorded on sound carriers from the 1950s and a. Re-edited by Vinzenz Hladky, Siegfried Behrend , Marga Wilden-Hüsgen and Joachim Trekel. Although the new editions so far only include his works for the mandolin as a solo instrument, chamber music works without mandolin as well as individual sacred choral works are also assigned to him in the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM). The question of whether all these works really come from him or were ascribed to them because of a confusion of names is left to future research.
