Giovanni Manfredini (born January 14, 1963 in Pavullo nel Frignano - Modena ) is an Italian painter .

Life

Giovanni Manfredini was born on January 14, 1963 in Pavullo nel Frignano. As a child, at the age of two, Manfredini suffered severe burns. After several painful skin grafts to replace and renew his own skin, his suffering became unbearable and he was no longer ready to undergo any further operations. The artist transfers this molting process, which originated in the fire, to the skin of the picture. In 1988 he published his first cycle of works, “Altar of Solitude”, which was exhibited at the Biennale dei Giovani Artisti dell'Europa Mediterranea in Bologna . A year later, works from the Contemporary Drawings Collection of the Galleria Civica in Modena are purchased and exhibited there. From 1992 he developed a new technique (see below) with body prints on burned or smoked surfaces. For Pope Francis , Manfredini created a shepherd's staff with a monstrance for travel in 2016, for which he used materials from African slums.

He lives and works in Modena and Milan .

technology

Manfredini has developed a process that cannot be assigned to any traditional genre, but combines characteristics of each. A mixture of shell meal and resin is applied to the image carriers. After a lengthy drying process, this surface is blackened with a Bunsen burner. Manfredini prints his own body or parts of it on the surface treated in this way, thus forming the imprints typical of his work. The absolute mimesis resulting from this printing process, the realistic representation down to the body hair and the blood vessels as well as the strong black and white contrasts often create the impression of photographs or even X-rays. Body parts or the whole body appear bright in a black environment, the interior drawing can only be read through shades of gray.
