Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibiena

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibiena (* 1618 in Bibbiena ; † June 21, 1665 in Bologna) was an Italian fresco artist , panel painter and stage decorator .

Giovanni Maria was a student of Francesco Albani and created frescoes and altarpieces as his assistant . He mainly worked in Bologna and is said to have designed the first stage decorations. He took the nickname “da Bibiena” to distinguish himself from a student of the same name in Albani's studio. This nickname stayed with the descendants. Giovanni Maria was the father of Ferdinando and Francesco Galli da Bibiena and thus the progenitor of the Galli da Bibiena family. Its members worked as theater architects and stage decorators at the most influential courts in Europe .
