Giovanni d'Anagni

Giovanni d'Anagni , lat . Iohannes de Anania (* late 14th century in Anagni ; † January 17, 1457 in Bologna ) was an Italian lawyer, presbyter and canon .

He should not be confused with the cardinal of the same name and diplomat of the 13th century.

Live and act

Born in Anagni at the end of the 14th century as the son of Leonardo, he studied after moving to Bologna from 1414 under Pietro d'Ancarano at the Collegio Gregoriano.

He became a lecturer in 1422 and continued his law studies the following year. In 1425 he was invited to Florence as ambassador and returned a few years later, from 1429 to 1430, as a lecturer. After his return to Bologna in 1431 he stayed there in the field of teaching until his death. Among his students were Pietro Barbo, who eventually became Pope Paul II , Andrea Barbazza, Ludovico Pontano and Alessandro Tartagni, who married d'Anagni's daughter.

After the death of his wife, he turned to religion in the last years of his life and was appointed canon by Bologna Cathedral in 1443 and archdeacon in 1448 .

He wrote various discussions and legal opinions that have appeared in several editions since the 16th century.

He died in Bologna in 1457 and left his inheritance to the needy and the Order of Servi di Maria .
