Giovanni di Francesco Toscani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni di Francesco Toscani (* between 1370 and 1380 in Florence , † May 2, 1430 in Florence) was an Italian painter .

Giovanni di Francesco Toscani was trained under the influence of Agnolo Gaddi , Lorenzo Ghiberti and Rossello di Jacopo Franchi , with the latter appearing to have worked in part. While he is close to the masters mentioned in his early and middle works, there are also clear influences of Masaccio in the later works . From around 1424 he was a member of the Florence Painters' Guild.

Toscani worked primarily as a painter of altar panels , cassone panels and as a fresco artist.

Until his real name was discovered, which could be determined from documents on the frescoes in the Ardinghelli Chapel in Santa Trinita (Florence) , he had been given the emergency name Master of the Crucifixion Griggs in art historical research , after the previous owner of his today New York Metropolitan Museum of Art preserved crucifixion tablet .
