Sophia Marlowe leads an unsteady life in San Francisco between partying and changing jobs. Her best friend Annie is always by her side. The young woman falls in love with the band manager Shane, with whom she also has a relationship. One day Sophia sells a vintage leather jacket on eBay , and she discovers the potential of this very lucrative business area. She quits her job as a receptionist at an art university in order to devote herself entirely to her Nasty Gal Vintage sales platform , with all the advantages and disadvantages for her private life.

Maike Karr from industry portal Serienjunkies.de finds Girl Boss was "something for everyone who can not tell you where to go or at least like as it would appear." The "lively protagonist" also reflects "the image and the mood of the series: bizarre, funny, ironic, sarcastic and exaggerated".
