Girma Wolde-Giorgis ( Oromo : Girmaa Walda Giyorgis Luchaa;, in Ethiopian script : ግርማ ወልደ ጊዮርጊስ ; * December 28, 1924 in Addis Ababa ; † December 15, 2018 there ) was President of Ethiopia from October 2001 to October 2013 . In Ethiopia, the president has mostly representative duties.

Life

Girma Wolde-Giorgis, who comes from the Oromo ethnic group , embarked on a military career after completing his training as an air traffic controller and graduated from Genet Military School in 1944 as a lieutenant. In 1956 he became Director General of Civil Aviation in Ethiopia and a member of the board of the Ethiopian airline. In 1960 he was elected to parliament for the first time until he was finally elected president on October 8, 2001. He was a member of the EPRDF coalition, which has ruled since 1991 .

On October 9, 2007, he was re-elected for a second six-year term. He was initially elected by the First Chamber, the Bundeshaus , then by the Lower House, the House of Representatives , with 430 votes in favor, 88 against and 11 abstentions.

On October 7, 2013, Mulatu Teschome was elected as his successor.
