Sahle-Work Zewde ( Amharic ሳህለወርቅ ዘውዴ ; born February 21, 1950 in Addis Ababa , Empire Abyssinia , today Ethiopia ) is an Ethiopian politician and diplomat . She has been President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia since October 25, 2018 .

Life

Sahle-Work graduated from the University of Montpellier with a degree in natural sciences and then worked in the Ethiopian diplomatic service. She has worked as an ambassador in France , Djibouti and Senegal and as a permanent representative of Ethiopia to UNESCO , the African Union and the IGAD . In 2011 she was appointed Head of the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) by Ban Ki-moon .

On October 25, 2018, she was unanimously elected as the first woman president by the Ethiopian parliament . This function is largely representative, in this respect comparable to the German Federal President . At the time of her election, she was also the only female head of state in Africa.

Sahle-Work has two sons. Her mother tongue is Amharic . She also speaks French and English. She is addressed with the name «Sahle-Work», since surnames are not used in Ethiopia; "Zewde" is her patronymic .
