Giselbert (Burgundy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giselbert , and Gilbert , (* 900, † 8 / 16 April 956 in Paris ) from the family Vergy was Count of Chalon , Count of Autun , Count of Auxerre and Count of Troyes and 952-956 Duke of Burgundy .

Life

Giselbert was the son of Manasses I, Count of Chalon and Count of Dijon († 918) and his wife Irmengard (Ermengard), who was probably a daughter of King Boso of Vienne from his second marriage to Ermengarde of Italy .

Giselbert's father was a loyal follower of Duke Richard the court lord , whose son-in-law Giselbert became through his marriage to Richard's daughter Ermengard.

After Giselbert's brother-in-law Hugo der Schwarze died childless in 952, Giselbert took over the counties of Autun (as early as 941/942) and Troyes . However , Giselbert did not have the official recognition as duke by the kings Ludwig IV and Lothar , rather the ducal dignity lay with the Robertine Hugo Magnus , whom he had to recognize as liege lord. Giselbert only carried the title of princeps Burgundionum .

To end the conflict with the Robertinians , Giselbert married his older daughter Liutgard in 955 to Hugo's son Otto of Burgundy , who succeeded Giselbert in Autun and assumed all sovereignty over Burgundy the following year. The county of Troyes gave Giselbert his second daughter Adelheid as a dowry for his marriage to Robert von Vermandois , which formed the basis for the county of Champagne .

Marriages and offspring

Giselbert was married to Ermengard (Irmgard) of Burgundy, daughter of Duke Richard the judge and sister of Duke Hugo the Black , with whom he presumably had two daughters:
