Giso I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giso I was a Gaugraf in Hesse in the first half of the 11th century, the likely founder of the Gison family , who established a sprawling county in Central Hesse and on the upper Lahn and Eder and reached its zenith with Giso IV around 1120. The possession of the Gisonen was the basis of what would later become the "Upper Hesse" part of the Landgraviate of Hesse .

He was mentioned for the first time in 1008 in a document from King Heinrich II. As Count in Oberlahngau , where he was probably official or titular count, without having any major personal or allodial ownership . A few years later, in 1015, Heinrich II. And his wife Kunigunde von Luxemburg donated a canonical pen at the royal court in Wetter , northwest of Marburg , and generously furnished it with imperial estates in the area. The Gisonen are subsequently proclaimed as governors of this monastery weather . It can be assumed that Giso I was the first Vogt, because the new foundation had to be protected militarily from the start.

Hollende Castle , located near Wetter , which was built before Gisos was first mentioned, is documented as the seat of the Gisonen. It was an imperial property and was therefore probably given to the counts as a fief.
