Gissur Ísleifsson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gissur Ísleifsson (* 1042 , † 1118 ) was, after the takeover of Christianity by the Icelanders in 1000, the second bishop of Iceland . From 1106 he was bishop in the diocese of Skálholt in the south of the island. In that year the north Icelandic diocese of Hólar was founded.

person

Gissur is described as tall, strong, and good-natured.

Education and marriage

Gissur's father was Ísleifur Gissurarson , Bishop of Iceland.

Like him, Gissur studied in Saxony at Herford Abbey and was ordained a priest there at a young age.

After he returned home from there, he married Steinunn Þorgrímsdóttir (approx. 1042 - after 1118), who had been married to Þórir Skegg-Broddason von Hof in Vopnafjörður for the first time. The couple initially lived there.

The couple traveled a lot, including making pilgrimages to Rome. When his father, Bishop Isleifur Gissurason, died in 1080, Gissur was abroad, but traveled to Iceland the following summer and was elected bishop.

Episcopal ordination

However, the episcopal ordination only succeeded after some wanderings.

Gissur first went to Sachsenland, because the responsible archbishop of Bremen should have consecrated him. However, he had just been removed from office. Gissur then continued his journey towards Rome. After an encounter, Pope Gregory VII sent him to Magdeburg and there he was finally ordained Bishop of Iceland by Archbishop Hartwig in 1082.

Skálholt as a bishopric and school location

When he returned to Iceland, he settled in Skálholt like his father and after his mother's death he donated the property to the church.

The church tenth in Iceland

Gissur was the strongest proponent of the admission of the church tithing in Iceland and caused this to be approved by parliament in 1097. He also ordered the first census in Iceland for this purpose.

Death and offspring

Gissur died in Skálholt in 1118 after serving as a bishop for 36 years.

He had several children. His daughter Gróa married Ketill Þorsteinsson , Bishop of Hólar.
