Gisulf I was the first Lombard dux (duke) of the Duchy of Friuli from 568 to around 581 .

Life

Gisulf was a nephew of the Lombard king Alboin . Gisulf took part in the conquest of Italy by his uncle Alboin in 568 as marpahis (commander of the cavalry). After the occupation of Veneto, Alboin appointed Gisulf, an extremely capable man ( virum per omnia idoneum ), to the dux of Forum Iulii (Friuli) with the capital Cividale . With Alboin's consent, Gisulf settled Lombard farae (family associations) selected by him there.

After Alboin's successor Cleph died in 574, the Lombards did not elect a new king during the 10-year interregnum, but were under the rule of 35 duces , whose influence increased greatly during this period. The Romansh population was suppressed more than before during this period.

When Gisulf died (probably around 581), Grasulf followed him as dux , who was probably Gisulf's brother. Grasulf ruled until around 590, after which his son Gisulf II took over the office.

In 1874 it was believed that Gisulf's sarcophagus was found in Cividale , as an inscription affixed there claimed. However, if it was a forgery, the attribution of the sarcophagus to Gisulf turned out to be incorrect.
