description

This herbaceous perennial plant forms a large tuber. The leaves are ribbon-shaped and latticed and grow out of a rosette. The leaf surface is light to medium green. Their height is 30 to 50 centimeters; the plant forms a four-year, pink inflorescence . The number of chromosomes is 2n = about 78.

Occurrence

The plant has its natural range in Madagascar , which is also expressed in the botanical species name. It also occurs in the Comoros.

Systematics

Aponogeton madagascariensis (Mirb.) H.Bruggen has the following synonyms: Aponogeton fenestralis (Pers.) Hook.f. Poir , Ouvirandra fenestralis . , Ouvirandra madagascariensis Mirb.

From Aponogeton madagasciariensis are three or more varieties:

  • Aponogeton madagasciariensis var. Madagascariensis : It is the nominate form with narrow leaves.
  • Aponogeton madagasciariensis var. Guillotii
  • Aponogeton madagasciariensis var. Henkelianus (tree) H.Bruggen : It has broad leaves and irregular lattice.
  • Aponogeton madagasciariensis var. Major (tree) H.Bruggen : It has broad leaves and regular lattices.

Use in the aquarium hobby

Like a whole range of water ears , this type of plant is also available in several varieties in specialist shops for planting aquariums . This plant species is of particular interest because of its peculiarly latticed leaves. However, this type of water ear is one of the very demanding aquarium plants that is only suitable for specialists. Among other things, it needs a rest period in which the tuber can regenerate. It is very sensitive to unsuitable water parameters. The plant usually dies after flowering. Offspring from seeds have only been successful a few times so far.

The plant's light requirement is medium to high. It needs water temperatures between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius. It is suitable for planting in the middle of the aquarium and can also be used as a specimen plant . Due to its size, the aquarium in which it is maintained should hold at least 200 liters of water.
