Giulio Krall
Giulio Krall (born July 26, 1901 in Trieste , † August 29, 1971 in Rome ) was an Italian civil engineer and applied mathematician.
Life
Krall received his laureate in 1923 as a civil engineer at the Polytechnic in Milan and in 1924 in mathematics at the University of Rome with Tullio Levi-Civita . After that he was assistant at the chair for mechanics in Rome until 1932 and also taught mathematical physics. Then he taught at the University of Naples at the chair for structural engineering until 1939 , when Francesco Severi brought him to the newly founded Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica in Rome. In 1963 he switched to the chair for statics and in 1968 to the chair for mathematical physics.
From 1925 to 1933 he was an engineer for the Ferrobeton company, which designed the first subway in Milan and the Torre Velasca in Milan, and later a consultant to the company. There he was mainly concerned with bridges, maritime structures and hydraulic engineering. His projects included the Ponte di Mezzo in Pisa and dry docks in Naples and Genoa, as well as the power line crossing of the Strait of Messina .
He also carried out theoretical research on the stability and dynamics (vibrations) of building structures such as bridges and developed new types of practical calculation methods for engineers. In mathematical physics, at the suggestion of his teacher Levi-Civita, he treated the theory of adiabatic invariants and applied it to celestial mechanics (two celestial bodies circling around each other with their own rotation and tidal effects).
In 1932 he received the Mathematics Prize of the Accademia dei XL . He was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and the Academy of Sciences in Turin.
