Giuseppe Corsi da Celano

Giuseppe Corsi Vangelisti ( called Celani * 1631 or 1632 in Celano ; † after March 10, 1691 in Ancona or Modena ) was an Italian composer of church music .

life and work

Giuseppe Corsi attended a Jesuit school in Rome in his youth . He took composition lessons from Giacomo Carissimi, among others . Corsi worked as Kapellmeister in several cities such as Gallese , Città di Castello , Naples , Rome , Loreto , Ancona and Parma . After his ordination, he worked from 1659 to 1661 as Kapellmeister in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , then until 1665 in San Giovanni in Laterano and in other churches. His students include Giacomo Antonio Perti and Petronio Franceschini .

Under Pope Innocent XI. Giuseppe Corsi was tried and convicted by the Inquisition. He was initially tortured on charges of defloration and later imprisoned for two years in Rocca Albornoz Castle in Narni .

On June 20, 1681 he became Kapellmeister at the court of the Duke of Parma, in 1688 he left this post because of a salary increase that was not granted. In 1691 he composed a motet in the style of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina on behalf of Prince Ferdinand de Medici .

Works

Only vocal works by Corsi have survived. A catalog of his compositions was created by Giovanni Tribuzio; it comprises 83 works, which are identified with the abbreviation TriC and the following work number.
