Giuseppe Liberto

Giuseppe Liberto (born August 21, 1943 in Chiusa Sclafani ) is an Italian priest , choirmaster , composer and former director of the Sistine Chapel Choir .

Life

He studied philosophy and theology at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Monreale and was ordained a priest in 1969 . From the beginning of his career, he performed the duties of his conductor in the cathedral of Monreale . He also taught at the Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini in Palermo , where he received diplomas in composition and instrumentation , and at the Theological Faculty of Sicily , where he taught liturgical musicology .

On May 29, 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him director of the Sistine Chapel Choir . In addition to the numerous celebrations, he conducted the papal band in more than 70 concerts in Italy and abroad: ( Japan , Hungary , Malta , Spain , Croatia , Albania and Germany ).

For the Libreria Editrice Vaticana he published in 2004 in the series Liturgica Poliphonia - I Canti della Cappella Musicale Pontificia "Sistina" , with already existing contents his compositions: Crux gloria , Te Deum laudamus , Magnificat , Laudate Pueri , Missa "Pie Iesu Domine" , Do it Petrus and Mane nobiscum Domine . In 2004 he published the CD Coronas Annum Benignitate of his organ works, that of the liturgical year, recorded in Germany by the organist Gianluca Libertucci . He has also published with Edizioni Carrara, LDC, Vivere in , Pauline, Portiuncula, Kelidon Edizioni and OMC Casa Discografica.

On October 16, 2010, Benedict XVI appointed Massimo Palombella SDB as the new director of the Sistine Chapel Choir. He was later appointed Apostolic Protonotar supra numerum .
