Gizem Saka (born April 9, 1978 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish artist and economist .

Career

Born and raised in Istanbul, Saka earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Istanbul Koç University in 1999. She then moved to the United States to complete a PhD in economics from Cornell University . Even as a young girl she was Turkish national champion in gymnastics and member of the Turkish national team in gymnastics from 1989 to 1993. At the same time she was interested in the school for painting and visual arts . In 2000 she taught at the same time as her studies at Cornell University in the Faculty of Art and Architecture. In 2005 she exhibited her works of art for the first time in Montreal in the “Galerie Gora”. Since then she has regularly participated in other well-known exhibitions. Since 2011 she has held economics seminars at Wharton School and lectures on the art market at Harvard University .

In Saka's painting, decorative elements of the Middle East appear along with the colors of the Mediterranean . Her pictorial motifs are women, reading, İznik ceramics and general figurative painting. In her "Woman" collection you see women in everyday situations, drinking tea, talking to other women, reading books, looking in mirrors or kissing their lovers. In “Istanbul Houses” simple cityscapes of their homeland are shown. Reading coffee grounds on the floor of espresso cups, Ottoman ships from the 16th century or painted literature on canvas are other painting motifs.
