The Gjensidige Forsikring ASA is a Norwegian insurance group . The origins of the company lie in a mutual fire insurance from Oppland , which was founded in 1816. The name of the company, however, originated from Christiania almindelige gjensidige forsørgelsesanstalt ' Christiania general mutual pension institution' from 1847. Between 2007 and 2014, the insurance company held shares in the financial company Storebrand and was temporarily its largest sole shareholder. In 2010 the insurance company was demutualized and floated on the stock exchange. Today Gjensidige Forsikring is part of the OBX Index of the Oslo Stock Exchange. The Gjensidigestiftelsen 'Gjensidige Foundation' holds over 62% of the shares in Gjensidige Forsikring.
Gjensidige Forsikring offers both insurance and other financial services. This is also done through Gjensidige Bank , which is part of the group. Gjensidige has subsidiaries in Denmark, Sweden and the Baltic States.
