P / F Bakkafrost is one of the largest fish processing companies in the Faroe Islands . The main line of business is the operation of salmon farms as well as the processing and sale of salmon . In 2015 Bakkafrost was the tenth largest salmon producer in the world. The company is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in the OBSFX Seafood Index .

history

Bakkafrost was founded in 1968 by the two brothers Hans and Róland Jacobsen. In 1971 her brother Martin Jakobsen joined the company as a co-owner. Initially, the company's business focused on marinating and packaging herring fillets. The company has also been operating aquaculture since 1979 . In the following years Bakkafrost became increasingly broad. In 2010 Bakkafrost merged with Vestlax , and in 2011 they took over P / f Havsbrún, a large producer of fishery products.

Positioning

  • In 2016 Bakkafrost emphasized that the company was in no way associated with the traditional Faroese pilot whale hunt - the grindadráp . Boats or other equipment are not made available for this purpose, nor are employees allowed to take part in pilot whale hunting during their working hours.
