Gjesvær ( Sami Geaissvearra ) is a fishing village on the Norwegian island of Magerøya . Since January 1st, 1984 it belongs to the municipality of Nordkapp in the province of Troms og Finnmark . About 130 people live in Gjesvær, up from around 350 at the beginning of the 1970s.

history

As the only settlement in Finnmark , its history can be traced back to the Viking Age ; it is mentioned in the Norwegian history Heimskringla , written around 1230, as Geirsver . The place name comes from the male given name Geir (Speer).

The place served the Vikings as a stage destination on the way to Bjarmaland and probably also to the Gjesværstappan archipelago north of the place . From 1869 Gjesvær was regularly called by steamers on the Hamburg route . The place was the first in the vicinity to be connected to the telegraph network. As with most other settlements in Finnmark, all buildings were burned down by the German occupation forces in 1944 as part of the Nordlicht company . In the winter of 1944/45, trade director Ole Thomassen nevertheless spent the winter together with his wife Ragna and Mattis Somby in a hut above the destroyed town. In addition to the hut, two houses have been preserved in Leirpollen near Gjesvær.

Since Gjesvær was involved only in 1977 with the completion of a 35 km long road to the Norwegian road network, the place was as well as the rest of the sparsely populated western part of the island Magerøya until 31 December 1983 of the more westerly municipality Måsøy because this could be reached faster by sea than the town of Honningsvåg in the east of Magerøya. Economy and Transport

There is a fish processing factory in the village, as well as a retail shop, a post office and a primary school. The main industry is fishing ; tourism (fishing, bird watching on Gjesværstappan) has grown in importance in recent years.

Gjesvær is located in the transition area from the polar tundra climate ( Köppen : ET ) to the cold-temperate climate zone ( Dfc ). The long-term mean, the average annual temperature is 2.5 ° C, the average monthly temperatures over the course of the year are between −3.43 ° C and 10.45 ° C.
