description

Smoothers have been used since the early Paleolithic to peel off skin and leather. They occur particularly frequently in the Upper Paleolithic ( Aurignacia ). The first straighteners made of bone material in Europe were developed by Neanderthals before the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic .

Arrow shaft straightener made of red sandstone from the Federmesser groups , around 13,000 years old, discovered in 1981 in Niederbieber in the Neuwied Basin. The 71 × 34 × 22 mm piece has engravings on the back.

Glätter were found in the double grave of Oberkassel . Arrow shaft were paired for sanding wooden shafts used for use as arrow shafts and are an indirect indication of the use of arrow and bow as hunting weapons for at least 13,000 years. The unusual decoration with stylized female figures of the Gönnersdorf type is one of the rare cases of artistic work from this period.

From the Neolithic smoother found rare, examples are taken from the county grave system of Friebritz . In the late Neolithic and the Bronze Age , so-called semi-trailers with a rounded and smooth surface were found on which hides were treated with a flat, round smooth stone , which was also used later.
