Glöcklehof Chapel

The Catholic Glöcklehof Chapel in Bad Krozingen is the oldest preserved building in the city. The chapel was consecrated to Ortisei in 1775 . It was built in the Romanesque style around the year 1000 by the St. Gallen monastery on its property. It was rediscovered around 1936 by a spa guest, the church preservationist Pastor A. Pfeffer from Rottenburg. Later excavations showed that it was part of a medieval court complex .

Frescoes showing the martyrdom of John the Baptist were uncovered on the altar wall . One of the oldest depictions of Christ north of the Alps can also be seen in this fresco. The book paintings of the monks from Reichenau Abbey served as a template . Depicted on the left is the beheading of John with the sword, on the right the feast of Herod with the dance of Salome . The eyes of those present are directed to the bowl with the head of Johannes. In the middle, John can be seen on the right hand of the judging Christ in the mandorla .

The other two frescoes date from the 17th century and are made in the baroque style. One shows St. Martin dividing his mantle, the other shows the baptism of Jesus by John. In 2009 the Romanesque wall fresco was restored, opinions on its success are divided, only conservation work was carried out - others wanted to achieve a color enhancement.
