Most modern private brewery in South Hesse
Behind the "brewing scenery" of Glaabsbräu

Glaabsbräu GmbH & Co. KG , based in Seligenstadt, is one of the oldest existing breweries in southern Hesse and one of the most modern breweries in Germany. Glaabsbräu is one of the few privately owned breweries still in existence in the Rhine-Main area .

The beer range currently consists of 19 beers.

Glaabsbräu was the licensor of the Vitamalz brand until 2016 . This was developed and patented by Ferdinand Glaab - the great-grandfather of the current managing director Robert Glaab - and his business partner Fritz Lux in 1933. In September 2016 Glaabsbräu sold all rights and licenses for Vitamalz to the Krombacher Brewery and has not been a licensor for Vitamalz since then.

Foundation and history

1744 to 1895

In 1744, councilor Johannes Ruf and his wife built the Zum Römischen Kaiser brewery in Seligenstadt , which is still the headquarters of Glaabsbräu today. In 1782 the son Johann Georg Ruf was enrolled in the Seligenstadt brewers' guild. After his death in 1808, his nephew Peter Josef Weidner II took over the inn and the brewery. The Wissel family followed until 1891. Ferdinand Glaab, great-grandfather of the current managing director Robert Glaab, married Mariechen Wissel and in 1895 gave up the leadership of the Roman Emperor . He founded the Glaab & Thoma GmbH brewery with his brother-in-law Johann Thoma .

1895 to 1999

His sons Ferdinand II and Jakob joined the family business in 1920. In 1921 the two breweries Glaab and Appelmann merged to form the United Breweries Seligenstadt . In 1931 the brewery acquired the patented process for the malt drink Vitamalz developed by Ferdinand Glaab I and Fritz Lux . Following the departure of Jacob Hauck founded Ferdinand Glaab I with his two sons, the Glaabsbräu F. Glaab & Co . After his death in 1939, his sons Ferdinand II and Jakob took over management of the brewery.

In 1960 Richard Glaab, Jakob Glaab's son, joined the family business as master brewer. In 1998 he was followed by his son Robert Glaab. Together they introduced the cloudy beer " 1744 cellar cloudy" .

Development since 2000

In 2000 Richard Glaab left the family business after 40 years and passed sole management over to his son Robert Glaab, who is the 9th generation to run the family brewery. In order to strengthen its identity as a traditional family brewery, the entire range of beers was switched to swing top bottles in 2004 . Robert Glaab carried out extensive modernization measures : in 2006 the steam boiler was renewed in order to bring the entire heat generation up to date and to reduce CO 2 emissions considerably. In addition, a new refrigeration system was installed in 2007. This is operated with a new type of ammonia-free refrigerant and thus ensures further energy savings and an environmentally friendly cooling supply for the entire brewing process.

Promoting the regional economic cycle is an important concern of Glaabsbräu. Since 2005 the brewery has been a founding member of " Die Freie Brauer ". In addition, in 2006 Glaabsbräu initiated a collaboration with farmers from Seligenstadt, Hainstadt and Rodgau in order to cultivate and purchase brewing barley from the region again. With the result that most of the brewing barley for the Glaabsbräu beer specialties is now sourced directly from the region.

Robert Glaab has been one of the first trained beer sommeliers in Hesse since 2007 .

Strategic milestones - Glaabsbräu reinvents itself

In February 2015, Glaabsbräu announced the construction of a new brewery. With around 3.2 million euros, the Glaab family made their largest investment to date in the company's more than 270-year history.

After only seven months of construction, the new brewery was officially put into operation on September 12, 2015.

The second strategic milestone followed in 2017 with the new brand identity. The range was switched to crown corks, so-called Euro bottles in 0.33 L and 0.5 L, and given new labels. The entire brand identity has been rejuvenated. This made Glaabsbräu the first brewery to introduce the new container in Hesse. Only the historical beer type Glaabsbräu "1744 Kellertrübes" was left in the swing top bottle. For its brand relaunch, Glaabsbräu won the German Brand Award 2018 in the category "Excellence in Brand Strategy, Management and Creation".

In 2018 the production capacity was increased by 30%. Further investments were made with so-called CIP systems (cleaning systems). By using the latest generation of CIP systems, Glaabsbräu reduced its annual water consumption by 4% and the consumption of cleaning agents by 10% per year.
