Glacier is a census-designated place in Whatcom County in the US state of Washington . The population at the 2010 census was 211. Based on per capita income , Glacier ranks last (522nd) of all areas ranked in Washington state. Glacier hopes to change this with the opening of the Glacier Chamber of Commerce .

Glacier is the closest community to Mount Baker , the northernmost of the volcanoes in the Cascade Mountains ; It is about ten miles (16 km) as the crow flies to the summit of Mt. Baker and about twenty miles (32 km) drive to Mt. Baker Ski Area . Less than a mile to the east is the Glacier Public Service Center , operated by staff from both the United States Forest Service and the National Park Service .

Glacier was founded in 1909 and named by Jennie Vaughn.

Originally a gold digger and lumberjack town, commercial impact was likely the cause of both the population growth and the interest of the Bellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad . The area became public property after the construction of the Mount Baker Highway in 1923.
