Hubert Miles Gladwyn Jebb, 1st Baron Gladwyn , of Bramfield, GCMG , GCVO , CB (born April 25, 1900 in Firbeck Hall , England , † October 24, 1996 in Halesworth , England) was a British politician and diplomat.

Life

Jebb attended Eton College and then studied history at Magdalen College at Oxford University . He graduated as one of the best in his class.

In 1924 he entered the British diplomatic service. He served in Tehran and Rome . Then he made a career in the Foreign Office. During and at the end of the Second World War he took part in the conferences in Tehran , Yalta and Potsdam .

From 1945 to 1946, Jebb was the first Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations until the first elected Secretary-General, the Norwegian Trygve Lie , took over the business.

Jebb then returned to work in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as the UK's ambassador to the Brussels Pact . From 1950 to 1954 he was the British UN ambassador. He then held the post of ambassador to France from 1954 to 1960.

In 1960 Jebb was raised to the hereditary nobility . He then became deputy leader of the Liberals in the House of Lords . He held this office until 1988. From 1973 to 1976 he was also a member of the European Parliament .

family

Jebb had been married to Cynthia Noble, a great-great-granddaughter of Isambard Kingdom Brunel , since 1929 . The couple had a son Miles, who succeeded his father as a baron , and two daughters: Vanessa is married to historian Hugh Swynnerton Thomas, Baron Thomas of Swynnerton . His younger daughter Stella is married to the French biologist and entrepreneur Joël de Rosnay . Jebb died in 1996.
