Gladys McConnell (born October 22, 1905 in Oklahoma City , † March 4, 1979 in Fullerton , California ) was an American actress of the late silent film era and pilot .

Life

Gladys McConnell was born in Oklahoma City, what was then Indian territory. She lived temporarily in Portland with her parents and a sister before the family moved to Los Angeles . There McConnell graduated from Hollywood High School.

Gladys McConnell's short-lived film career began in 1926 as a contract actress with Fox Film Corporation . In the following years she worked in more than 20 films and serials, mostly as a female lead actress, but was unsatisfied with the choice of roles and therefore terminated her contract with the studio in order to start her own business. In 1927 McConnell was voted one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars , who were predicted to have a great film career. However, this did not come true with McConnell. Like many other silent film stars, the actress failed to make a successful transition from silent to sound films. In 1930 she ended her career after only four years.

Gladys McConnell, who was only nineteen at the time, got her pilot's license as early as 1924 and was considered the most experienced pilot on the Hollywood film scene alongside Ruth Elder during her acting career. So she flew several times to filming with her own machine.

Gladys McConnell was married twice. From 1926 to her divorce in 1929 with Arthur Q. Hazerman and from 1931 to her death with the lawyer A. Ronald Button, with whom she had a daughter. McConnell died on March 4, 1979 at the age of 73 in Fullerton, California. She was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale .
