The smooth mucous head ( Beryx mollis ) is a species from the family of mucous heads . The Japanese ichthyologist Tokiharu Abe (1911-1996) described this marine bony fish as the third species in the genus Beryx in 1959 . He called it Beryx mollis ( Latin mollis = soft) because its meat is "soft".

features

The smooth mucous head has no cushions on the inside of the scales like the other two species, Beryx decadactylus and Beryx splendens - the scales therefore do not protrude, so that in Japanese the species is even known as the "balloon mucous head" (日本語, fusen-kinme ), despite the compress body shape given here. Longliners also report that Beryx mollis (Physoclist?) Tends to get addicted to drums when they are picked up - another reason for the trivial name.

The eyes are very large, the iris light. The skin is crimson, silver on the sides. The fish grows up to 30 cm. Important distinguishing features of this species are (from the fin formula ) the D IV / 12–13, and the number of pyloric tubes : (5 to) approx. 20.

Occurrence

The smooth slime head lives benthopelagically at a depth of 100–500 m. Its occurrence has so far been secured from Japan to New Caledonia in the Pacific and in the West Indies ( Yemen ). Abe assumed that the other species described from Madeira in the Atlantic do not correspond to the species that are so named around Japan. On the basis of various morphological and meristic details, he suspected other species to be newly described. So far, neither Nelson (2006) nor Eschmeyer (2009) have accepted this - however, B. mollis is considered valid. Genetic studies support this view.
