Glenn Leslie Aitken (born September 30, 1952 in Woolwich ) is a former English football player.
Career
Born in the London borough of Woolwich, Aitken played as a teenager at Chelsea and was part of the England youth team, but did not make it into the Chelsea professional team. After an unsuccessful trial training at Charlton Athletic , he interrupted his football career for over a year before he was accepted into the reserve team in the summer of 1972 after a trial training at Wolverhampton Wanderers . Just two months later, he moved as an amateur to the Football League Fourth Division for Gillingham FC . With his competitive debut on November 11, 1972 against Mansfield Town , he was since Bob Harrison in April 1967 the first amateur player who played for the south-east England club. In December 1972, the midfielder then signed a professional contract, but he came to regular missions only from January 1974, when Dave Peach had left the club for Sunderland.
After the departure of coach Andy Nelson in May 1974, Aitken lost his place in the team under his successor Len Ashurst and then switched to non-league football at Wimbledon FC during the 1974 summer break . With Wimbledon he won the Southern League championship three times in a row between 1975 and 1977 and also acted as captain in 1977. After the third league title, the club was elected to the Football League and Aitken was in the early stages of the season, including at Wimbledon's debut game in the Football League, before he was no longer used from December 1977 due to a back injury.
For the 1978/79 season he returned to non-league football and joined Maidstone United . In September 1981, Aitken moved to Dartford FC as a player- coach , but was dismissed there in February 1982 after making a joke at an awards ceremony at the mayor's expense. He then ended his career at Chatham Town and Thanet United and devoted himself to his career in publishing before later opening his own advertising agency.
Aitken is still connected to football, in 2002/03 he worked as an assistant coach at Whitstable Town , then in June 2003 Aitken took over the position of CEO at Gravesend & Northfleet , which he held until October 2004. Since then he has been president of Hollingbourne FC .
