Kifle Wodajo

Ato Kifle Wodajo (born October 30, 1936 in Addis Ababa , † April 28, 2004 in South Africa ) was an Ethiopian diplomat and politician .

biography

Kifle Wodajo came from a family of dignitaries at the court of Emperor Haile Selassie and in May 1963, at the age of just 26, became the first general secretary of the newly founded Organization for African Unity (OAU). In later years he was Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City and Ambassador to the United States .

Between 1974 and 1977 he succeeded Zewde Gabre-Selassie as Foreign Minister of the military junta ( Derg ) after the overthrow of Haile Selassie and then went into exile until 1991 after Mengistu Haile Mariam came to power , where he lived mainly in the USA.

On his return he was elected a member of the House of People's Representatives in 1991 and was temporarily chairman of the commission for drafting a constitution. After retiring from political life in 1996, he became head of the Horn of Africa Peace Center, a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing peace and conflict prevention in the region. Between 1998 and 2000 he was a member of the International Staff Investigating the Causes of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994.
