Grupo Globo (formerly known as Organizações Globo ) is a Brazilian media conglomerate , founded in 1925 by Irineu Marinho (1876–1925) in Rio de Janeiro . With around 24,000 employees (2012), the group is the largest media company in South America and the fourth largest in the world. Until 2011, the company was able to steadily increase sales, which was mainly due to the strategic focus on electronic media and the high income from the advertising market in the television division.

The Globo Group includes pay TV broadcasters , magazines , radio , film productions , newspapers and real estate , and most of its profits come from the Rede Globo TV network with telenovelas .

history

Beginning

The success story started with the newspaper A Noite , founded in 1911 by the journalist Irineu Marinho . With the success of the newspaper, which came out in Rio de Janeiro in the late afternoon, Marinho decided in 1925 to publish O Globo, which appeared daily in the morning . After his sudden death just a few weeks after starting O Globo, it was his son, Roberto Marinho , who took over the management of the company in 1931 after a transition period. Over time, this resulted in the Globo Rádio in 1944 and Globo TV in 1965 as a commercial TV network. The rise of the media empire finally began under the military dictatorship .

With Globo TV, the family company is now the largest broadcaster in Brazil with a reach of 99.99 percent. In addition, the company is heavily involved in the market for film productions and also has influence in the music industry with its difficult-to-understand network of investments.

Contract with Time Life

Due to lack of funds to sign in 1962 the US Time Life and Rede Globo, a joint venture treaties. The contract required 30 percent of its profits to be given to Time Life. In return, the broadcaster received a loan equivalent to around 20 million euros as well as extensive technical support. This contravened the Brazilian Constitution because foreign direct investment in media companies is prohibited. But the government allowed this anyway. The agreement was also in conflict with the business policy of the founder Irineu Marinho. He himself had long fought against the participation of foreign capital in Brazilian companies. Under pressure from the opposition Globo had to terminate the contract with Time Life in 1968 and the station was nationalized ; the joint venture partner pays off. Nevertheless, Roberto Marinho managed to establish the first national broadcasting chain within a short time .

Digital age

In 1995 Marinho created the largest TV and film production center in Latin America with the inauguration of “Projac” ( Projeto Jacarepaguá ). Ten TV studios , seven production units and the latest digital technology are available on 1.6 million square meters . Intended to polish up the bad image from the years of the military dictatorship, exactly the opposite is happening. There are allegations that the construction was illegal as it was supported by government subsidies .

Since the death of Roberto Marinho in 2003, his three sons, Roberto Irineu Marinho , João Roberto Marinho, and José Roberto Marinho have been running the media giant. In May 2013, ZenitOptimedia published a study according to which Grupo Globo ranks 17th on a list of the world's leading media companies.
