Gloria Boateng (born August 28, 1979 in Pramso in Ghana ) is an award-winning education activist and founding initiator of the non-profit education support association SchlauFox eV The German-Ghanaian has been a teacher in Hamburg since 2011.

Life

Childhood and youth

Gloria Boateng grew up in the small town of Pramso, southeast of Kumasi , with her grandmother and was brought to Germany in 1989 by her mother, who lived in Germany, and her grandfather. A short time later, her mother was deported and her grandfather died. Boateng was then accepted into a German family as a foster child . Especially in this phase of her life, she had serious experiences of racism. Despite major language barriers, constant hostility and a pregnancy in the last school year, Boateng graduated from high school in 2000.

Studies and professions

Gloria Boateng trained as a foreign language correspondent at the State Foreign Language School in Hamburg and then worked for several years at the University of Hamburg as a foreign language clerk. At the same time she took up a teaching degree with the subjects German and technology, which she completed with the second state examination.

Gloria Boateng has been a teacher at a Hamburg district school since 2011. She is also a qualified fitness trainer and personal food coach.

Private

Gloria Boateng has a biological daughter and a foster child.

Social Commitment

Gloria Boateng has been committed to equal opportunities and educational justice since her youth . In 2008 she initiated the foundation of the SchlauFox association, which has been committed to promoting the education of socio-economically disadvantaged children and young people ever since. In 2019, the association consists of almost 200 volunteer employees, six full-time employees and six major programs:

  • JEA! - A qualification for everyone : support and coaching of young people towards their first graduation
  • Ankerlicht : mentor for young refugees
  • STAR : Support for inclusion through school support
  • Plietsche children's kitchen : nutrition education through cooking courses and nutrition-related activities
  • Varia Kultur : Promotion of intercultural dialogue with the means of art
  • Focus : needs-based individual help

Awards

In 2004, Gloria Boateng was accepted into the scholarship program of the German National Academic Foundation and received a full scholarship until 2008. She also has received numerous awards for its commitment to the club SchlauFox: 2011 awarded her the then Federal Commissioner for Migration and Refugees Maria Böhmer , the Integration medal . It was proposed for this in the previous process by the SPD politician and member of the Bundestag Aydan Özoğuz . The award was presented to her at the Federal Chancellery .

In 2016, Gloria Boateng was one of six women who was awarded the trophy “The Golden Image of the Woman ” by the magazine Bild der Frau der Funke Mediengruppe . The highly endowed prize was presented to her as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the award in the “ Theater an der Elbe ”.

In 2019, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded them the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Merit Cross on Ribbon).
