Gloria Scott

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gloria Scott (born February 26, 1946 in Port Arthur , Texas ) is an American soul singer. Her best-known hit is Just As Long As We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another) from 1975, a top 20 hit on the American R&B charts.

Life

Scott is the second of nine children. Her mother had sung in a gospel choir and performed with Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers . Scott grew up in Houston and moved to Northern California with her family as a teenager. In 1964 she was briefly a member of the group Gloria Scott & The Tonettes , who recorded only one unsuccessful single I Taught Him (Part I & II) for Warner. A good ten years later she released her debut album What Am I Gonna Do, produced by Barry White , on the legendary Casablanca label, which was to write disco history a little later . Scott's LP, a "masterpiece" of the soul genre according to the FAZ , was one of the label's first ever releases. The title track was the first of two hits on the American R&B charts, but only made it to number 74. (A Case Of) Too Much Lovemakin ' missed the charts, but was featured around 20 years later by Lisa Stansfield on the album So Natural covered.

After Scott had their biggest hit with Just As Long As We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another) in early 1975, which also reached number twelve on the disco charts, this single was supposed to herald the release of a second album. But it didn't come to that. Although the recordings for this LP were already finished, they were never released. Still contractually bound to Barry White, Scott could not release any more records for other labels. Her music career petered out before it really started. At the end of the 1970s, Scott was still singing in the background of the former Supremes singer Mary Wilson, after which it became completely silent around her.

After the temporary end of her music career, Scott moved to Guam for several years before coming back briefly in the early 1990s with the single It's So Wonderful . Again many years went by until Scott, with the help of German DJ Daniel Dombrowe, made his live comeback at the Baltic Soul Weekender music festival in 2009 . The FAZ wrote a detailed article about the singer in 2012 and celebrated her only album in it: "Elegant, string-refined arrangements, driving groove, plus the powerful, supple voice of a singer who can be mentioned in the same breath as Aretha Franklin and Etta James ." Scott appears annually as one of the highlights of the Baltic Soul Weekender.
