Glupschgeister is a children's game by the game designers Jens-Peter Schliemann and Bernhard Weber . The game for two to four players, ages five and up, lasts around 20 minutes per round. It was published by Kosmos Spiele in 2016 and was included on the recommendation list for Children's Game of the Year 2017.

Theme and equipment

The aim of the game is to find and catch as many "bulging ghosts" as possible. These creatures have to be identified by magnifying glass stones and then fished. Whoever is the first to completely fill his / her hiding place with 9 bulging ghosts wins the game.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a game board "deep sea"
  • a large slice of fish
  • a small disc with the "Glupschgeistern"
  • a rotating figure with a swivel base, known as the "Krakengeist"
  • 14 magnifying lenses ("sea lids")
  • 60 ghost tiles, 10 of each type
  • three Kraken Spirit tokens
  • four starfish
  • a number die

There are a total of six different bulging spirits that are modeled on various marine animals:

  • Maggie (seahorse spirit),
  • Lisa (jellyfish spirit),
  • Don (mustache ghost),
  • Luc (snail spirit),
  • Bob (puffer spirit) and
  • Al (eel spirit).

Style of play

Before the start of the game, the playing field is set up by fitting the turntables with the fish and the glowing ghosts into the box insert; the glowing ghost tiles are evenly distributed on the fish disc. Then the discs are covered with the deep-sea game board and fixed with the rotating figure. The "sea lids" are distributed over the corresponding recesses. Finally, the turntable is turned in the direction of the arrow until a bulging spirit appears in the viewing window. Each player then chooses a color and receives the corresponding starfish, with two players each player chooses two colors.

Actions per turn
  1. Roll the dice and spin the octopus spirit
  2. Search for bulging spirits
  3. Drop off starfish
  4. Fishing for gullies
  5. Pass the dice

The starting player rolls the dice and then rotates the “Krakengeist” by as many bulging ghosts as the result of the dice shows. The ghost then visible in the viewing window must be looked for by all players through the sea cover; if you can recognize one or more of the ghosts you are looking for, you place your starfish on the corresponding sea cover and block it accordingly. When all players have placed their starfish, fishing for the bulging spirits begins with the active player. The player removes the sea cover marked by him and now fishes the bulging ghosts he is looking for out of the hole with his fingers and puts them in his own hiding place. The tiles under the sea cover can be pulled and pushed as desired while fishing, after which the hole is covered again. Then the dice is passed on to the next player.

The game ends in the round in which a player has collected nine bulging spirits and thus completely filled his hiding place. If several players have their hiding spots full in the round, they win together.

Variation for two players

If there are two players, each player chooses two starfish at the beginning and plays accordingly. The winner is the player who filled both hiding places first, whereby he can bring his bulging spirits into any of the two hiding places regardless of the color currently in use. The players take turns starting with the player who threw the dice.

Variant "Krakengeist"

In the "Krakengeist" variant, the three "Krakengeist" tiles come into play and are distributed on the turntable together with the bulging spirits. During the game, the Kraken Spirit blocks the sea holes where it appears. If it is not visible, the players can fish in the hole, but must put back any captured ghosts if they fish out an octopus ghost.

Versions and reception

The game Glupschgeister was developed by Jens-Peter Schliemann and Bernhard Weber and published in 2016 by Kosmos Spiele for the Nuremberg Toy Fair . The illustrations are by Annette Nora Kara . It was on the 2017 list of recommendations of the Children game of the year received. The jury for children's game of the year describes the game mechanism as follows:

"[...] In order to successfully bring the little rascal into his hiding place, that is, to take his tile off the playing field, skill is also required in this atmospheric and turbulent underwater adventure."

After the first German version of the game at Kosmos Spiele, a version under the title Gekke Geister was published by 999 Games in the Netherlands . In 2017, Kosmos also published an English-language version under the name Lagoonies .
