The α-subunit of the glycoprotein hormones (CGA) is the 92 amino acid long protein subunit common to the four peptides LH , FSH , TSH and CG . It combines with one of the four beta subunits to form the corresponding peptide hormone .

The term glycoprotein hormone for the four peptides mentioned, which comes from the English-speaking world, is somewhat unfortunate, as erythropoietin (EPO) , for example, is a glycoprotein and a hormone at the same time , but does not belong to this protein family.

biosynthesis

CGA is produced in those tissues where the corresponding hormone is needed. The gene for CGA is located on chromosome 6 and comprises four exons and 9,610 base pairs. The transcript is 710 bases in length and the final peptide is 92 amino acids in length.
