The Gmelin mugwort ( Artemisia gmelinii ) is a species of the genus Artemisia in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is named after its discoverer, the natural scientist Johann Friedrich Gmelin (* 1748 in Tübingen).

The Gmelin mugwort is a dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. It is not very aromatic. The heads are 2.5 to 4 millimeters in diameter. The leaves are long-stalked and 2-fold (up to 3-fold) pinnate. The central rib has small intermediate sections. The blade measures 3 to 15 × 1 to 8 centimeters.

Occurrence

Gmelin mugwort occurs in warm temperate Russia, Mongolia, China and Japan in stone and gravel steppes, on bank slopes and on river gravel.

use

Gmelin mugwort is rarely used as an annual ornamental plant for borders. It has been in culture since 1910 at the latest. There is only the 'Viridis' variety. This is pyramidal and richly leaved.
