Genre : Gnathochromis
Type : Gnathochromis permaxillaris
Scientific name
Gnathochromis permaxillaris
( David , 1936)

Gnathochromis permaxillaris ( Syn .: Limnochromis permaxillaris ) is a species of cichlid that is endemic to the East African Lake Tanganyika . Etymology : Gr .: "Gnathos" = pine + chromis , a genus of damselfish in which cichlids were previously classified.

features

Gnathochromis permaxillaris can reach a length of 15 cm. It is flattened on the sides, rather high-backed for a Lake Tanganyika cichlid, and has a pointed, loud-mouthed head. The jaws are highly mobile and when they are pushed forward they form a funnel with which the small zooplankton animals that make up the food are sucked in and then filtered out with the gill rake. The basic color is silvery pink and the reddish shimmer becomes stronger and stronger towards the tail. The head is iridescent green, body and tail bluish. The pectoral and anal fin are yellowish.

Way of life

Gnathochromis permaxillaris is rare, lives on muddy sandy soils at depths of 5 to 200 meters and feeds on plankton. Like all other Limnochromini , Gnathochromis permaxillaris is a mouthbrooder . Eggs and fry are protected by the female and male.

Systematics

The fish species was described in 1936 by Lore Rose David under the scientific name Limnochromis permaxillaris , and in 1981 Max Poll assigned it as a type of the newly introduced genus Gnathochromis . Within the African cichlids ( Pseudocrenilabrinae ) the species is assigned to the tribe Limnochromini , while the second species of the genus Gnathochromis , Gnathochromis pfefferi, belongs to the tribe Tropheini . Gnathochromis pfefferi must therefore be placed in a different genus.
