Go Guitars is a German electric guitar ensemble that performs works from the fields of new music and experimental / improvised music .

occupation

Go Guitars was founded in 1997 as an electric guitar quintet to perform works by composers from the field of new music . The quintet consisted of Christian Bergmann, Gunnar Geisse , Gregor Holzapfel, Harald Lillmeyer and Adrian Pereyratogether. After some time, the desire arose - also through the discussion with the composers - to formulate its own language as an ensemble, to optimize the techniques developed and to find suitable game situations and forms for the group. With an increased focus on improvisation and musical-instrumental experiment, the trio go guitars, consisting of Gunnar Geisse, Harald Lillmeyer and Adrian Pereyra, was created in addition to the quintet, which is dedicated to these new tasks and demands on the orchestra.

history

In 1981 the New York composer Lois V Vierk wrote “Go Guitars”, a contemporary work for 5 electric guitars. The musicians first came together in 1997 for a performance of this piece to form the ensemble of the same name. As a result, the quintet dedicated itself to the interpretation of contemporary compositions. Works by Zoro Babel / Michael Lentz , John Cage , Fred Frith , Gunnar Geisse , Michael Hirsch, Tom Johnson , Chico Mello, Josef Anton Riedl , Iris ter Schiphorst , James Tenney , Lois V Vierk, Wolfgang Heisig , Bernhard Weidner and were performed Fredrik Zeller.

A highlight in 2005 was the Concerto Grosso Growth for 5 electric guitars and large orchestra by Fredrik Zeller , which Go Guitars premiered with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence under the direction of Frank Ollu.

The concert series “processing” (2008) with the participation of international musicians such as Richard Barrett , Elliott Sharp and eRikm is an example of the increased focus on experimental / improvised music . The ensemble describes its work as follows: “For an open-ended development process that affects both people and music, the ensemble seeks dialogue and confrontation. The theoretical discourse on aesthetic and strategic questions of sound shaping or composition is just as important as the question of the performance practice of electronic, experimental, improvised and new music.
