history

The gobelet is a tribute to the Geneva citizen and future nobleman André Falquet. It was awarded to him by the city of Augsburg in 1703 during the turmoil of the War of the Spanish Succession . The reason for this was André Falquet's petition - who was able to speak French - to Marshal Claude-Louis-Hector de Villars , who was then in command of the French troops in Bavaria . André Falquet had the order to release four richly laden wagons with merchandise that had been confiscated by the (French) commandant of Bavaria in Donauwörth . These had traveled from Nuremberg to Augsburg without valid freight documents . André Falquet succeeded in this and was honored with the gobelet by the Augsburg city council.

receiver

The recipient of the art object, André Falquet, was a merchant in Geneva. He was born in 1687 and died in 1755. For the delivery of essential war goods to the imperial army in the War of the Spanish Succession, he was in 1725 by Charles VI. ennobled.

owner

The Gobelet was given to the Vaudois by the Geneva residents in 1815. In November 1894 he was acquired by the Geneva Musée Fol with the help of a special fundraising campaign (French souscription particulière ) before he was transferred from the Musée Fol to the Musées d'Art et d'Histoire in 1899.

Originator

The artist who created this art object was called Jean-Mathieu Rehm (or Hans-Matthias Rehm) and came from Augsburg . An analogue of the André Falquet gobelet was exhibited in the National Museum in Budapest at the beginning of the 20th century ; his current whereabouts are unknown.
