Godebald (also Godebold , Gondebald ) († November 12, 1127 in Oostbroek near Utrecht) was Bishop of Utrecht from 1114 to 1127 .

Life

He came from a Frisian noble family. Nothing is known about the circumstances of how he became bishop . It is quite possible that Henry V appointed him to do this in 1114. It is clear that he was on the side of the opponents of the king around Lothar von Süpplingenburg as early as 1116 . He was present in 1116 when the loyal bishop Mazo von Verden was replaced by Thietmar von Verden . He was also present at a meeting of the prince opposition in Fritzlar in 1118.

After the dispute over the occupation of the Liège diocese , he approached Henry V again. In 1122 he confirmed the rights granted to the city of Utrecht by the bishop . As a result, he tried to balance things out between the emperor and the pope. He was one of the witnesses who signed the Worms Concordat of 1122.

However, in 1123 he was allied with Petronilla of Holland , who had revolted against Henry V. The emperor besieged the Schulenburg near Bentheim, which belonged to the bishop . Lothar and Bishop Dietrich II of Munster came up with their troops for relief . Because of a swamp separating the two armies, there was no battle. The emperor had to break off the siege. Some time later it was captured and destroyed.

After Heinrich's death, his successor Lothar took control of some Frisian districts.

In his spiritual area of responsibility, he promoted monastic discipline. He founded the Oosbroek Benedictine Abbey. He made important donations to other religious institutions. In Middelburg he drove out the secular capitulars and replaced them with Benedictines .

In his last years he lived as a monk in Oosbroek Monastery from 1126.
