Goethe memorial stone (Wernigerode)
The Goethe memorial stone is a memorial in the town of Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt . It commemorates the visit of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to Wernigerode in the late autumn of 1777.
The memorial stone is located in a green area in the Salzbergtal on the edge of the old town of Wernigerode. He is wearing a portrait medallion of Goethe with the inscription The 28 year old Goethe visited Wernigerode in December 1777 . The memorial stone clearly shows that it was used for other purposes in the past. It was erected on the same site for a different purpose as a memorial stone at the beginning of the First World War. Only after 1945 in the course of the demilitarization and rededication of previous monuments was the memorial stone provided with a Goethe medallion and has since been used as a Goethe memorial stone.
The stone is reminiscent of Goethe's winter journey, which he set out from Weimar at the end of November 1777. He traveled via Ilfeld to Wernigerode, where he visited the pastor's son Victor Leberecht Plessing at the Oberpfarrkirchhof. He had read Goethe's epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther , published in 1774, and, like the hero of the novel, was close to suicide. Goethe managed to save the son of the superintendent Plessing from a similar fate. However, Goethe did not travel under his real name, but pretended to be an artist from Gotha.
In Wernigerode, Goethe did not visit the palace and Count Christian Friedrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , who ruled from there , but traveled from here to Goslar . He had previously stayed in an inn on Wernigerode's market square, which no longer exists today. Only a wooden plaque reminds of the well-known guest there today.
In the monument register of the city of Wernigerode, the Goethe memorial stone is listed as a small monument under registration number 094 03305.
The writer Bernd Wolff processed Goethe's Brockenfahrten in a tetralogy. In the first part of Winter Streams , published in Berlin in 1987 . Goethe's Harzreise 1777 (Verlag der Nation, Berlin ISBN 3-373-00075-0 , new edition 2008 by Pforte Verlag Dornach, Switzerland ISBN 978-3-85636-210-2 ) Bernd Wolff also described Goethe's stay in Wernigerode.
