Scientology: A Prison of Faith is a 2015 documentary directed by Alex Gibney . The film is about the New Religious Movement Scientology . The film premiered on January 25, 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival . In Germany it was shown for the first time on June 27, 2015 at the Munich Film Festival .

The film is based on Lawrence Wright's nonfiction book In the Prison of Faith: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Interior of a Modern Church . Gibney interviews former Scientologists such as Paul Haggis , Mike Rinder, Jason Beghe , Silvia "Spanky" Taylor, Sara Goldberg, Tom DeVocht and Marty Rathbun , among others .

Gibney divided the film into three acts. In the first, former Scientologists describe how they became members of the movement. The second act is devoted to the early years of Scientology and the story of Founder L. Ron Hubbard . In the final act, the behavior of the Scientology leadership, especially that of David Miscavige , is examined in more detail.

According to Rotten Tomatoes , the film received 95% positive ratings (based on 87 reviews with an average rating of 7.8 out of 10). Metacritic has a Metascore of 80 points (based on 11 reviews).

Before the film was released, Scientology booked full-page advertisements in the New York Times and other US daily newspapers, in which parallels were drawn with the hoax " A Rape on Campus ". There were also attempts to influence the critics' reporting on the film.

Awards

At the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards , Scientology: A Prison of Faith was nominated for an Emmy in seven categories and was also able to win the award in three categories.
